Sporting Events a Springboard to Spirituality?
Organized sports had a big impact on my life. At age twelve while living on the north side of St. Louis, Missouri,1972 I was introduced to my soon to be spiritual father figure
"Mr.Charles" Owens. "Mr.Charles" was a unique man full-time carer for an invalid
mother, reverend, and basketball coach for hundreds of inner-city St. Louis youths. After
caring for his mother during the day he would hop in his big blue van and scourer the whole
of the city picking up my basketball team mates the "Crusaders".Rarely did we get to ourscheduled games on time picking up 15-25 youths city wide takes hours. During our hours of travel" Mr.Charles" would preach non- stop. Now being young most of us would be ignoring his repeated sermons on brotherly love and the "golden rule" but looking back on those days, I realise that etched in my mind are memories of bonding during the games with my team mates a brotherly bonding. I do not remember when the feelings to listen to the words of wisdom from my spiritual father figure overtook me but I soon went from being the first pickup rushing to the back of the van where all the horse play was carried on, tobegging to be the first pick up to enable my assured reserved seat riding shot gun to experience the sermons from the front row.Yes sports can be a springboard to spiritual enlightenment and as i grow older, look back at these pasts thinking it's not if you win orlose,it's not how you play the game, its the fact that we are all brothers, but more importantly we should love each other as Jesus loves us.The fatherly love.
